That’s obvious when one examines the classrooms of a typical school in the United States. Only a few students are really doing their best. It’s estimated that today only a third of all students work hard in class. The rest just vegetate. And that situation gets worse the farther along students move in their grades. Let’s face it. Today in any given middle school or high school, the majority of students are in holding tanks and don’t do quality work. That’s why, more than ever before in history, teacher competencies are crucial.

Yet teachers, like the modern student body, have varied backgrounds too. Some are well qualified to meet today’s challenges. Others, sadly, were trained in the “good old days” methodology and never learned how to teach properly. For that reason, teacher performance can vary drastically from room to room and grade to grade in today’s schools. Also, serious teacher shortages have brought staff members, who know little about either the subject or the procedures, into our classrooms. So what’s a parent to do?

You might say something like this: My son Mike isn’t good with substitutes. He’s the type of kid who gets easily upset when there’s a change of teachers or routines. So can I tell him not to worry? That even when you’re out, there’s a folder telling where everybody sits and what the lesson is? Perhaps you can also ask your child what happened on a day when the teacher was out. Naturally, you never want Mike to turn into a tattletale, but if he should tell you that the sub they had one day was totally stumped, maybe question number 5 doesn’t deserve a YES check.
