In the conclusion, I probe these bodies of practice and knowledge as a whole for who and what they do not see, and what this tells us about the WSF as a political undertaking specific to the times in which we are living, expressive of transitions that are underway, carrying the best of the emancipatory traditions of Western modernity which are themselves in movement, but which are also reproducing patterns of coloniality and exclusion that have proven very resistant to change within this civilizational paradigm.

Finally, this chapter addresses the question of subaltern presence, participation, and protagonism in and over the social forum. Overall, I contend that, first, the WSF at the world level remains a powerfully Brazilian- and secondarily Latin American-inflected phenomenon. The 34 New politics on the global left internal debates and struggles for power over the WSF are those of the contemporary Latin American left, in an internationalist context in which the European left is the other primary pole.

In representing these knowledges, I have relied heavily on texts produced by movement activists in the WSF identified with each political current, writing about their practices vis-à-vis the WSF and their theorizations of the WSF as a phenomenon and political project. I consider these as primary sources – first-hand accounts and interpretations by practitioners involved in constructing the WSF and I give them great respect and weight in that regard. In the background, however, and central to my own processes of interaction with and interpretation of these texts, are numerous interviews, informal conversations, encounters, and on-the-ground observations in hundreds of events in dozens of social forums.
